Burning Witches in the Borderland

Burning Witches in the Borderland

We weren’t literary burning witches out here in West Texas, but what we did have last Wednesday night at the Rockhouse Dive Bar Kitchen Venue was a sheer treat, a dose of Swiss/Dutch Heavy Metal by the all-female group Burning Witches.   Up to a month ago, I personally had never heard of them, but because it’s an all-female act, that catches your attention, in my opinion, that’s the hook. So, I reached out, got approved and boy am I glad I did, these ladies put on one hell of a show, from the first couple of songs, I was impressed and that doesn’t happen as much as I would like it too.
The band is Swiss, founded in 2016 by Romana Kalkuhl, who plays Rythm guitar, then came Jeanie Grob on Bass and Lala Frischknecht on percussion, but they have gone through three lead guitarist and one other lead singer during the past 8 years, now in place is Laura Guldemond doing vocals and Courtney Cox on lead guitar, the way they sounded last Wednesday, all the pieces of the puzzle are there and they blew the doors off the joint.   Quick history, 5 releases, 3 EPs and a dozen singles in the past 8 years, first US tour was in 2022 when the opened for the Iron Maidens.  Speaking of the Iron Maidens, there seems to be a serious connection with these all-female metal bands, Courtney Cox is from the Iron Maidens, a band I shot two years ago, it was a pleasure seeing her the other night. Crypta, Nervosa and now Burning Witches, all 4 shot here at the Rockhouse over the past two years, all 4 just unbelievable acts, nothing like all girl Metal bands, always packs the house.  Burning Witches was just as I suspected, a no holds bar, in your face insane metal at its finest.  Laura Guldemond was in complete control of the stage as well as the crowd, high energy at its best, second to none in my book.  Check these ladies out, you too after the first couple of songs will be a fan as I am, take my word for it and of course, we’ll see you at the next rock show.
